Operations Overview

Inter Pipeline is an integrated energy infrastructure business that owns and operates four business segments:

  • Conventional Oil Pipelines - Comprised of the Bow River, Central Alberta and Mid-Saskatchewan pipeline systems. Combined, these systems transport approximately 170,000 b/d to central and eastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan.

  • Oil Sands Transportation - Comprised of the Cold Lake, Corridor and Polaris Pipeline systems this business segment has nearly 2,500 km of operating pipeline and 3.8 million barrels of storage. The Oil Sands Transportation business is the largest oil sands gathering business in Canada - transporting roughly 786,000 b/d of bitumen blend.

  • NGL Extraction - Comprised of the Cochrane, Empress II and 50% ownership of Empress V extraction plants located on the TransCanada natural gas transmission system at the western and eastern Alberta export points. In 2011 these facilities processed an average of 2.6 bcf/d of natural gas producing an average of 107,000 b/d of natural gas liquids.

  • Bulk Liquid Storage - This business segment consists of 12 bulk liquid storage terminals located at deep-water terminals across the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, and Germany. Together, these terminals have a combined liquid storage capacity of almost 19 million barrels, forming the fourth largest bulk liquid storage business in Europe.

Inter Pipeline is dedicated to growing each business segment by the optimization of our asset base through efficiency improvements and the addition of new value-added services. Inter Pipeline has completed the $1.85 billion Corridor expansion project, which increased diluted bitumen capacity on the Corridor system from 300,000 barrels per day to approximately 465,000 b/d.  Inter Pipeline is also presently adding capacity to the Cold Lake system.

Inter Pipeline is also in the early stages of developing the Polaris pipeline system, which is being developed as a stand-alone diluent transportation system serving the Athabasca oil sands region. It is expected to enter into service in late 2012.
